October is Co-op Month

This October, during annual Co-op Month observances, cooperatives everywhere celebrate their commitment to community—a core and uniting cooperative value.

Community is not just where we work—it’s why we work. Whether large or small...rural or urban...consumer- or producer-owned...every day, cooperatives invest their time, talent and resources to make their communities better places to live, work and play.

What are Cooperatives?

Cooperatives are businesses that—

  • are owned and democratically controlled by their members—the people who use the co-op’s services or buy its goods—not by investors.
  • return surplus revenues (income over expenses and investment) to members proportionate to their use of the cooperative, not proportionate to their ownership share.
  • are motivated by service to their members, not by profit.
